To the Tasmanian Government ยท Firearms Amendment Bill 2026

To the Hon. Jeremy Rockliff MP, Premier of Tasmania, and the Hon. Felix Ellis MP, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management:

We, the undersigned residents of Tasmania, support genuine action against firearm theft, illegal guns and dangerous individuals. We draw to your attention that the Firearms Amendment (Miscellaneous) Bill 2026 does not deliver it - and instead:

  • targets licensed, police-checked owners rather than the criminals and illegal firearms behind firearm-related harm;
  • would reclassify common rifles and shotguns and confiscate them through a "buyback" - taking lawful property from people who have broken no law, at a cost the State cannot afford;
  • commits money the State does not have - a $596.7 million deficit, net debt heading toward $10 billion, and more spent servicing debt than on police and fire - for no gain in community safety;
  • would sign Tasmania up to a national firearms register that surveils the law-abiding, not the criminal.

Your petitioners therefore respectfully request that the Government:

  1. 1. not proceed with the Bill in its current form;
  2. 2. stop targeting licensed, police-checked owners - drop the reclassification, confiscation, national register and related measures, and rule out any cap on lawful ownership;
  3. 3. direct police resources and funding to the real source of firearm crime - illegal guns, criminal networks and organised crime;
  4. 4. not borrow money the State does not have - in deficit and heading toward $10 billion in debt - for a scheme that will not make Tasmanians safer.
